Prison board seeks bids for pipe replacement

Roughly 250 feet of flue pipe need replaced in the Butler County Prison.

John Campbell, director of county facilities and operations, said at the prison board meeting Tuesday that sections of pipe in the boiler room in the South Washington Street jail need replaced.

“Over the last seven, eight years, it’s deteriorated,” Campbell said.

The prison, which replaced the old jail formerly on Vogeley Street, opened in 2009.

“I think it’s just a design flaw,” Campbell said about the rotting pipe.

He said the condensation is significant.

“On a cool morning, you can see the mist coming up,” Campbell said.

He said other work is required to replace the deteriorated pipe.

“We’re going to have to demolish a wall,” Campbell said.

The prison board approved requesting bids for the pipe.

Campbell said he acquired three quotes, but they all exceeded the $19,400 threshold for bidding.

The three quotes ranged between $19,963 and more than $23,000.

Among the pieces needed are 55 pieces measuring 8 inches by 36 inches, 13 pieces measuring 8 inches by 50 inches, and 14 pieces measuring 6 inches by 36 inches.
