Foundation will make Giving Day contribution

PITTSBURGH — The money that was donated to nonprofits in Butler County before the May 3 Day of Giving was suspended will be matched by the Pittsburgh Foundation at 25 cents to each $1 donated.

Butler agencies will receive all donations except for the 4.99 percent of each donation as an Internet service fee, and they will receive a prorated share of the match pool.

Amy Beiler, chair of the Endowment for Butler County, said, “It’s the best thing we can do at the moment, and we’re looking toward opening it again in this year, which it might be three months down the road.”

The matching decision was announced Thursday by the Pittsburgh Foundation, which organized the regional fundraising Day of Giving. The Endowment for Butler County oversaw this program for county organizations.

The Day of Giving was suspended part way through May 3 after the fundraising company Kimbia of Austin, Texas, which handled the donations, had technical difficulties.

The foundation will decide later on a rescheduled Day of Giving.

Butler County’s match pool was to be at least $20,000. The money lost is set to be replenished, but it is yet to be determined from where.

More than 50 agencies in the county were taking part in the Day of Giving.

Maxwell King, foundation CEO and president, said in the release, “We are very disappointed that this year’s event fell short of the high standards of performance we expect from a program that since its inception six years ago has raised more than $40 million for worthy nonprofits.”

The release said that the foundation is in talks with Kimbia to find out what caused the technical difficulties. In the meantime, the participating nonprofit agencies are being surveyed regarding options for the recovery of the donations made for them.

“While the source of the problem lies thousands of miles from Pittsburgh in the operations of (Kimbia), which contracted with community foundations across the country to run this event, we at The Pittsburgh Foundation keenly recognize our responsibility to help our participants,” King said in the release.
