Food for Profit workshop offered in Cranberry
CRANBERRY TWP — Penn State Extension is offering a class next month for people interested in turning a family recipe or homemade food product into a business.
Food for Profit will be a one-day workshop from 8:45 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. June 7 at the Cranberry Lake Grill at Sherwood Oaks.
The class will cover local and state regulations, food safety issues and business management concepts that all must be considered in setting up a commercial food business.
It would be useful for anyone considering starting a food business or any entrepreneurs who are considering diversifying what they do, said educator Winifred McGee.
Some examples of common business ideas that would benefit from the class include farmers who want to make their berries into jam or jelly, people making cucumbers into pickles, bakers or people who want to commercialize a favorite family recipe.
The workshop is especially directed to individuals who will make and pack their products for resale through grocery stores, farm markets or restaurants.
The class also can help people interested in being part of a new trend such as gluten-free foods, locally grown foods or food trucks.
The workshop will have a maximum of 25 participants.
Prepayment and registration are required for the workshop. Sign up online at http://extension.psu.edu/food/safety/entrepreneurs or call the registration coordinator at 717-921-8803.
