Slugfest works for champs
Millersville took another step toward defending its PSAC baseball title Monday at Kelly Automotive Park.
The Marauders (46-4) defeated East Stroudsburg, 15-8, in a slugfest to remain in the winner’s bracket portion of the double-elimination tournament. The teams combined for 36 hits and used 10 pitchers.
There were 13 players who enjoyed multi-hit games in the contest.
Millersville’s first six batters in the lineup combined for 16 hits. Mitch Stolzfus led the way with two doubles, two singles and two RBI while Dan Stolzfus had a triple, two singles and three RBI. Jeremy Musser had three singles and three RBI.
Casey Saverio and Steven Zimmerman had three hits each for East Stroudsburg.
In other games:
West Chester 5, Mercyhurst 2 — The Golden Rams (34-11) stayed in the winner’s bracket as Eric Close limited Mercyhurst (39-11) to two hits over six innings.
Drew Diehl doubled, singled and had two RBI to lead the winners offensively. Cameron Balego had two of Mercyhurst’s five hits.
Seton Hill 6, California (Pa.) 1 — The Vulcans (26-22) were eliminated. Butler graduate Mick Fennell was hitless in three at bats and drew a walk.
Mike Bittel (8-2) went the distance and tossed a two-hitter for Seton Hill. Chris Miller had three singles.
Gannon 4, Shippensburg 3 — The Golden Knights (31-16) stayed alive as Matt Cardy’s sacrifice fly plated Mark DeVita with the winning run in the bottom of the eighth inning.
DeVita had three singles and an RBI. David Cricks was the winning pitcher in relief.
In today’s tourney action at Kelly Automotive Park, Seton Hill and East Stroudsburg were scheduled to face each other in an elimination game at 9:30 a.m. Gannon plays Mercyhurst in an elimination game at 12:30 p.m.
The Seton Hill-East Stroudsburg winner returns to face West Chester at 3:30 p.m. The Gannon-Mercyhurst survivor plays Millersville at 6:30 p.m.
The tournament title game is slated for noon Wednesday.
