Becomes 1st Butler BlueSox alum in big leagues

Seneca Valley graduate and former Butler BlueSox star Kevan Smith is now on the active roster of the Chicago White Sox.

Smith, a catcher who was batting .345 with a double and two home runs in eight games this season for the team’s Triple-A affiliate in Charlotte, was called up on Sunday after Chicago catcher Alex Avila was placed on the 15-day disabled list with a sore hamstring.

Smith batted .260 for Charlotte last year with six home runs and 36 RBI.

Smith did not see action in Sunday’s 4-1 home win over the Texas Rangers. He and the White Sox begin a three-game series in Toronto tonight.

Chicago currently leads the American League’s Central Division with a 13-6 record.

Smith is the first former Butler BlueSox player to reach the major leagues. He played for the team in 2010, batting .347 with 35 runs scored and 30 RBI.

He graduated from Seneca Valley in 2006 and attended the University of Pittsburgh on a football scholarship. After playing quarterback for the Panthers for three seasons, he joined Pitt’s baseball team and was drafted by the White Sox in the seventh round in 2011.

Smith could not be reached for comment.

An outstanding catcher at Seneca Valley who was drafted out of high school, Smith instead opted for Pitt and pursued football. He was the Raiders’ starting quarterback in high school, but missed a year due to injury.
