The Rev. William J. Maloney

The Rev. William J. Maloney, 93, died Thursday in Pittsburgh.

Father Maloney was born March 3, 1923, in Pittsburgh, the son of Charles and Coletta (Sohl) Maloney.

After attending Holy Rosary Elementary School and Central Catholic High School, both in Pittsburgh, he spent a year at Duquesne University and at St. Charles College in Catonsville, Md., before attending St. Mary Seminary in Baltimore for his priestly formation. Father Maloney was ordained a priest for the Diocese of Erie on May 6, 1948, in St. Peter Cathedral by Bishop John Mark Gannon.

Father Maloney began his priestly ministry as parochial vicar of St. Peter Cathedral in Erie. After serving there until January 1949, he was appointed parochial vicar of the Holy Redeemer Parish in Warren, an appointment which he held until 1954.

The next five years were spent as the parochial vicar of St. Joseph Parish in Oil City, until he was appointed in 1959 to be chaplain at St. Vincent Health Center in Erie, a position he held until 1965. He was appointed pastor of St. Peter Parish in Conneautville in 1965 and of St. Eusebius Parish in East Brady in 1966. In 1972, he was named pastor of St. Adalbert in Sharon and served there until his appointment as pastor of St. Michael Parish in Emlenton in 1977.

Father Maloney retired from active ministry in 1991, returning to his home diocese of Pittsburgh. For many years of his retirement, he celebrated Mass and heard confessions at St. Paul Parish in Butler.

Father Maloney is survived by his sister, Mildred Regan, and his nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his sister, Coletta Moran, and his brother, Leo Maloney.

MALONEY — Visiting hours for Rev. William J. Maloney, who died Thursday, March 17, 2016, will be from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at the CHARLES W. TRENZ FUNERAL HOME, 11110 Frankstown Road, Penn Hills.Additional visitation will take place at 9 a.m. Wednesday at St. Bartholomew Church. Bishop Trautman will be the main celebrant of the funeral Mass at 11 a.m. Wednesday at the church.Burial will take place at the Christ Our Redeemer Cemetery, Ross Township.
