Students raise $29K for Miracle League

Seneca Valley High School students raised more than $29,000 for the Miracle League of Southwestern PA at the second annual Raiderthon Saturday and Sunday.

JACKSON TWP — A group of Seneca Valley High School students stayed on their feet all night Saturday to support a good cause.

Students raised a final total of $29,704 for the Miracle League of Southwestern PA at Raiderthon, which ran from Saturday night into Sunday morning.

The second annual event, modeled after Penn State University’s THON, required the 176 students to stand, dance or participate in activities for 12 consecutive hours.

They were allowed to sit down and rest only if they made a donation in exchange for a 30-minute “relaxation package.”

There was a dodgeball tournament, ping pong, video game stations, a balloon maker, a live band, big ball volleyball and other activities.

Each hour the participants learned a new section of a line dance that they all did at the end of the event, said Katie Halliday, teacher and student council adviser.

Guest speakers included parents, school board members and children who participate in the Miracle League.

The students exceeded the $20,000 goal for the campaign, Halliday said.

“I truly saw the student body come together and bond at this event. I am very proud of the money they raised, but also the positive attitudes and school spirit that came along with it,” she said.

The students were group into teams and competed with one another to raise the most money. The winning team, Super Heroes, raised $3,869.

Leading up to the event, they raised money through various methods including a GoFundMe page, dining for dollars events at restaurants, donation cans placed in public places and going door-to-door seeking donations.

Last year, the first Raiderthon raised $19,258.

The Miracle League gives children and adults with physical and mental disabilities a chance to play organized baseball, according to its website.

Cranberry Township Community Chest also has been collecting donations for the Miracle League as this year’s project of the year. The Community Chest seeks to raise $600,000 to resurface the Miracle League field in Graham Park in the township.
