Softball mom complains about proposed fields

She cites lack of amenities

ADAMS TWP — A longtime Mars girls softball mother had pointed questions for the Mars School Board on Tuesday about the ball fields planned for Centennial School.

Amy Berkopec said she has been a softball mom for 14 years, and her fifth child is participating in the sport.

Berkopec said the softball parents and coaches are excited about the prospect of the two new fields. However, she said although the cost to build the fields is $660,000, they will not have batting cages, a bullpen, a flagpole, dugouts, water, storage or electric except for the scoreboard.

“(The players) have waited so long for fields for this program, and they’re getting a lesser field and amenities than they have now,” she said.

Berkopec said the program would like to hold playoffs and bring money into the district, but that would be impossible without electricity or a concession stand.

Berkopec did say the boosters have benefactors who are willing to provide funding for a concession stand and a net for a batting machine. Another softball enthusiast, she said, has offered to donate a refrigerator for a concession stand.

She asked board President Dayle Ferguson what the boosters should do next.

Ferguson replied that the $660,000 bid accepted included considerable grading and earth moving.

“This is a significant investment for the district,” Ferguson said. “We agreed it’s time (to add the new fields), and the softball team has been extraordinarily patient.”

She said boosters should contact Superintendent Wesley Shipley, who would put them in touch with the individuals who could add the boosters-supplied amenities once the fields are complete.

Ferguson said the board was aware the items mentioned are missing from the plans, and that adding them would happen faster with the boosters’ help.

“So we welcome that partnership,” she said.

The fields will go on either side of Officer Edward Brooks Drive, which is the bus driveway from Route 228 to the Centennial School near the border between Adams and Middlesex townships.
