Car pulled from pond
OAKLAND TWP — No one apparently was injured when a stolen Pontiac Grand Am went off the road and into a small pond along Hohn Farm Road. Police are looking for the driver.
Emergency responders spent more than two hours Wednesday afternoon at the pond at 164 Hohn Farm Road as divers from Unionville Volunteer Fire Company searched the submerged four-door sedan and the pond, which is about 10 feet deep at its deepest point, but ultimately found no trace of anyone.
It wasn't immediately clear when the accident happened, and it did not appear that anyone witnessed the crash. Emergency responders say a passing motorist noticed a knocked-over road sign and tracks leading into the pond, and called 911 to report the crash at 3:12 p.m. Wednesday.
Tracks left by the vehicle and the knocked-over sign indicate the car was traveling east, but the circumstances of the incident weren't clear to emergency responders.
“It (the vehicle) got in there some way,” said Jeff Stoner, chief of Oneida Valley Volunteer Fire Department, “But we don't know how it got there.”
Responders at the scene were dealing with bags full of items and what appeared to be waterlogged stuffed animals.Several plastic soda bottles floated in the pond, but the vehicle did not appear to be leaking any gas, oil or other fluids.State police said the vehicle was stolen sometime Monday or Tuesday from the Mahood Road home of Darla E. Whitlatch, 53, of West Sunbury. The vehicle had been in the driveway with the keys in the ignition, police said.Police ask anyone with related information to contact the barracks at 724-284-8100.
