Start date is late summer
ZELIENOPLE — Construction on the planned municipal parking lot between Main and South Clay Streets will start in late summer, borough council members said.
Council approved awarding federal grant money from 2014 to CT Consultants, an Akron, Ohio, company to do underground and grading work.
The grant, $100,000 from the Appalachian Regional Commission, is one of three the borough has received for the parking lot.
The others are from the state and valued at $500,000 and $2.3 million, respectively.
The latter will be used for all three phases of the revitalization project. Money to be used from it has not been determined.
“It’s a really good start,” borough engineer Tom Thompson said.
The contract between the borough and CT Consultants has to be signed by the Butler County Commissioners as part of the contract process. It will be presented to the commissioners Wednesday.
The second part of the contract, which council said it expects to have next month, will deal with topographical work on the lot, including striping and marking.
“I’m glad it’s on its way,” borough manager Don Pepe said. “As soon as the county commissioners sign the contract to mobilize we’ll get going.”
The parking lot is the first phase of the borough’s revitalization project.
It is to have 111 spaces and other amenities including islands and trash receptacles. It will have one primary entry point on its southern side and be metered by an electronic kiosk.
Council members said the tentative start of construction is later than anticipated.
Pepe said this was due to the borough having to bid through the county commissioners and the parking lot’s design coming in later than expected.
“It’s not a big glitch by any means,” Pepe said. “My time frame (late spring) was a lot more aggressive than it ended up being.”
Soon after the parking lot is finished, the revitalization project will shift focus to reopening the Kaufman House and making Main Street improvements.
