County watershed group wins award

PITTSBURGH — A Butler County watershed group that led a community-wide effort to repair eroding stream banks near the Connoquenessing Creek has won a 2016 Western Pennsylvania Environmental Award.

Representatives of the Connoquenessing Watershed Alliance in Butler will accept the award May 26 at the Western Pennsylvania Environmental Awards Ceremony at the Westin Convention Center Hotel in Pittsburgh. The award is presented by Dominion and the Pennsylvania Environmental Council.

The alliance replanted a riparian buffer along seven miles of sewer line crossings following the completion of a major habitat improvement project in Thorn Creek.

The project planted more than 1,500 seedlings of 30 varieties of native trees and shrubs. It also built more than 30 in-stream fish habitats to stabilize more than 5,000 feet of stream bank.

The group got more than $300,000 in watershed improvements from grants, donations and partnerships. About 20 groups or individuals participated in the project, which is one of five winners in the region.
