Book parties at Chicora Elementary
Third- and sixth-grade students from Chicora Elementary School celebrated during annual parties themed after the books they read this year.
The boys and girls had two separate events.
The boys read the book “I survived the Joplin Tornado.” They scrambled through a tornado simulator brought by the Butler City Fire Department, and then the Chicora Fire Department showed them how they would deal with the aftermath of a natural disaster. The boys also played with Morse code and packed small survival goody bags.
The girls read the book “Leah Dives In,” which is is set in Brazil, and the girls' The American Girl Tea Party featured Brazilian fruits and foods. The girls also mimicked the character in their book by making and starting their own travel journals. They also watched videos about Brazil. The two events are planned each year for the spring.
