ADAMS TWP — A new $31 million middle school is being considered for the Mars School District.

The current school at the intersection of Route 228 and Three Degree Road needs about $20 million in renovations.

Superintendent Wesley Shipley told the school board Tuesday night that the middle school is no longer conducive for the programs planned for seventh- and eighth-grade students.

He said the amount of money needed for those programs is so high, it might make more sense to build a new school.

The district could borrow the money for a new school in about 2.5 years if it does not borrow any money before then, according to Anthony Ditka, the district's bond counsel.

The board took no action Tuesday night, but it is expected to make a decision later.
