2nd CranFest scheduled

Free event returns April 9

CRANBERRY TWP — The township will sponsor two family-oriented events next weekend.

The second CranFest will include a folk and food cultural festival and a chance to get a behind-the-scenes-look at some township services.

The free event will take place from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. April 9 at the municipal center, 2525 Rochester Road.

At stations around the center, visitors will have a chance to learn about how the township’s public works, public safety, administration, parks and recreation, engineering, codes, information technology and customer service departments operate.

In the back parking lot there will be a Touch-a-Truck event where children and adults can get an up-close look at a fire truck, a dump truck, police cars, an ambulance, a garbage truck and front loader and other township vehicles.

A folk and food festival is coordinated by the Cranberry Area Diversity Network and sponsored by the Cranberry Sister Cities Association, the Cranberry Public Library and the Butler County Tourism and Convention Bureau.

Gary Winterhalter, co-founder of the Diversity Network, said there will be about 12 different authentic foods available and numerous performances or demonstrations.

Last year’s event had an estimated 2,000 people attend, Winterhalter said.

The cultural groups and club participating in the event are nonprofit and represent the cultures and nationalities of people who live or work in the township, he said.

“We use the entertainment and food as means to get people in the door, but we really want them to have a chance to engage with their neighbors and with the people from these cultures. They will have a chance to see that diversity and inclusion are such an important part of our township and our community,” Winterhalter said.

Many Nations Singers, a Native American group, will do a drum and dance performance.

A Bavarian group, D’Lustigen Isartaler, will demonstrate Scherenschnitte, a paper cutting craft technique.

Other organizations and demonstrations will include the Philippine-American Performing Arts of Greater Pittsburgh, the Croatian group Junior Tamburitzans, belly dancing, Tae Kwon Do, line dancing, Ukranian dancing, Japanese tea ceremony and Indian henna tattoos.
