Burke humbled by 'legend' status
Jonna Huemrich Burke’s first reaction was surprise.
Followed by confusion.
The former Butler girls and current Bethel Park girls basketball coach was reacting to the news she was named to the ACC Legends Class of 2016.
“I really was shocked,” Burke said. “My reaction was ‘Wow. A legend? What is that?’ That’s way too much of a title.”
Burke was a standout women’s basketball player at the University of Pittsburgh from 1990-94, scoring 1,807 career points.
She is seventh on Pitt’s all-time scoring list.
Burke also pulled down 954 rebounds and had 224 steals. She is ranked in the Panthers’ top 10 in those categories as well.
After the 1990-91 season, she was named Big East Rookie of the Year. She was a second-team all-Big East selection as a sophomore and a first-team selection in both her junior and senior seasons.
“It’s very surreal and I’m humbled by it,” Burke said of the 2016 legends class that includes one player or coach from each current ACC school.
What struck Burke as odd was it was an ACC list.
“I never played in the ACC,” Burke said.
That oddity, however, didn’t change the fact that Burke is in rare company.
She admitted she was star struck by some of the players she met during the 12th annual ceremony held in early March.
“I was humbled by the company,” Burke said. “There are women with far greater accomplishments than mine on that list.”
Each honoree was asked to speak and share a career highlight from their playing days.
Burke’s career highlights were easy.
“In 1991-92 and 1993-94 we beat UConn,” Burke said. “A lot of the career highlights shared involved UConn.”
Burke, a Bethel Park graduate, has been coaching at her alma mater for 13 years.
She was inducted into the Bethel Park Athletic Hall of Fame in 2001 and was a 2010 inductee into the Western Chapter of the Pennsylvania Sports Hall of Fame.
In 2013, she guided Bethel Park to a WPIAL Quad-A title.
“It just goes by so fast,” Burke said. “It seems like I was coaching in Butler just yesterday. The main reason we left Butler was (husband Kevin and my) family live in the South Hills and we wanted to start a family.”
The Burke’s have a 10-year-old daughter, Logan, and a 6-year-old son, Tanner.
Burke has enjoyed great success at Bethel Park. The Black Hawks were 18-7 this season, losing in the WPIAL Quad-A quarterfinals to North Allegheny and in the PIAA playoffs in the first round.
“We’ve been fortunate enough to have some really good players over the past 13 years,” Burke said.
