Twp. officer fired

Missing $6K being investigated

CLINTON TWP — Butler state police are investigating why nearly $6,000 is missing from township coffers.

The Clinton supervisors March 15 ratified the firing of township secretary/zoning officer Maggie Nelson. She could not be reached for comment.

Supervisor Kathy Allen, supervisor chairman, referred questions to township solicitor Mike Gallagher.

According to Gallagher, the township auditors found an irregularity in the books on March 3. The township supervisors on March 4 fired Nelson.

Police were then notified.

“It’s in the state police’s hands,” Gallagher said.

District Attorney Richard Goldinger said the investigation is ongoing.

“It’s currently being investigated,” Goldinger said. “There are no charges filed yet.”

Nelson, who is a Clinton resident, was a township employee for more than 10 years. For the past eight years, she was the full-time secretary.

The supervisors on March 15 also voted to have a forensic audit done. Gallagher said that audit would extend back to at least 2014.

He said the township won’t be able to provide further information while the criminal investigation continues.

According to a township news release, residents would be updated once more information is available.
