Man arrested in wife's murder

WINFIELD TWP — A Wilkinsburg man who allegedly told police he strangled his wife after a night of drinking wine was arrested Wednesday at the Butler County home of his sister and brother-in-law, according to court documents.

In a criminal complaint filed Wednesday, Allegheny County police say Randall Fertelmes called the Wilkinsburg Police Department after receiving a disturbing call from his brother-in-law, Richard Katilius of 1065 Old Gate Road. Katilius, 60, told the Fertelmes that he was on his way to their home to drop off his dog because he had just killed his wife, Linda.

“It’s bad, it’s really bad, I killed Linda,” Katilius reportedly told his sister, Ruth Fertelmes, according to court documents.

Randall Fertelmes called 911 and asked police to do a welfare check on Linda Katilius, 63, who police found dead in a second-floor bedroom of the Katilius home, with her head resting on a bedroom door and blood on her left hand, according to the criminal complaint. She was pronounced dead at 4:36 a.m. Wednesday.

Meanwhile, state police in Butler responded to the Fertelmes’ home on Keasey Road in Winfield Township, where they found and arrested Katilius wearing a blue-colored shirt with suspected blood on it, as well as scratches on his left hand, chest and neck area, according to the complaint.

Police took Katilius to the state police barracks in Kittanning, where he allegedly admitted to killing his wife, saying he had been drinking wine Tuesday night and had strangled her.

Katilius told detectives that he didn’t intend to kill his wife.

“He stated that he had been drinking red wine last night, and nothing really snapped inside of him,” the criminal complaint states. “He stated that he just did it, and he does not remember why.”

An autopsy performed Wednesday by the Allegheny County Medical Examiner’s Office found that Linda Katilius died of manual strangulation, and ruled the case a homicide.

Katilius has been charged with a single count of criminal homicide. He was arraigned on the charge early Thursday morning and is scheduled to go before Allegheny County Court Judge Jeffrey A. Manning at 10 a.m. April 1, for a preliminary hearing.

According to court documents Katilius is in Allegheny County Jail and has been denied bail.

The Fertelmes did not return a message left Thursday morning seeking comment.
