Garage work on schedule

The parking garage for the Centre City project is on schedule and $57,000 under budget.

Project manager Joe Saeler told Butler City Council Tuesday night that the savings are due to changes made in the construction process.

The workers are close to finishing the walls of the garage, and more excavation will begin soon.

Because of the construction, McKean Street should be reduced to one-lane on Monday, and steel should be erected starting April 4.

By May 1, the steel work should be done and then the workers will start setting slabs of concrete.

A motion to approve a payment to Thomas Construction for $278,306 for garage construction will be made at Thursday’s council meeting. A motion to pay the Community Development Corporation of Butler County $29,078 for the construction management services, and a motion to pay Gateway Engineers $12,497 for engineering also will be made at the meeting.

The Centre City project is being built by the city and J.S. Capitol.

The combined cost of the garage and the hotel is $13.2 million. The garage is a 238-space, four-floor structure. The hotel is a 276-room Marriott Springhill Suites.

Both are expected to be open by the end of the year.
