Hundreds of runners race through the streets of Harmony on Saturday in the eighth annual Shamrock Shuffle. More than $20,000 was raised, most of which will go to Zelienople Rotary Club projects.

HARMONY — Saturday’s eighth annual Shamrock Shuffle was a success, race organizers said.

The three-race event had 615 participants and raised more than $20,000 in gross revenue, said organizer Joella Baker.

“We’re still waiting on some invoices,” Baker said.

Baker said out of the money raised, $13,000 will go to the Zelienople Rotary Club and its projects. The other $7,000 will go toward race expenses.

Baker said there was great support from the athletes and spectators.

“I thought it was great,” she said. “Luckily it was dry, and we had good weather. It was cold, but it was still really nice.”

Last year, the Rotary Club split the money with the Zelienople Chamber of Commerce. This year, the club will have all the money for its own projects.

Those projects include scholarships, dictionaries for elementary school students, aid to grade school students in Honduras, and the sponsorship for the 4th of July parade.

“It’s fantastic,” Rotarian Dan Fazio said about the Shuffle. “We started out with just a handful of runners on Strawberry Ridge, and it’s grown into this tremendous event.”

“Harmony has been a great host to us,” he continued. “They have welcomed us with open arms.”

Saturday’s events included a half-marathon, a 5K and a one-mile race.

Top finishers in the half-marathon were: Richard Powell, first; Grant Bower, second; and Drew Sapp; third.

Baker and Fazio said they hope the Shamrock Shuffle will continue its success in the future. “I’m really happy with the event and the support from everybody,” Baker said.
