Police arrest DUI suspect

Man also charged in domestic dispute

A suspected drunken driver being sought in a case of domestic violence just hours earlier was arrested and jailed after he refused to immediately pull over for Butler police trying to make a traffic stop Saturday morning.

An officer eventually had to tackle the suspect, 54-year-old Mose Alexander Lane of Butler, when he would not comply with police commands after getting out of his sport utility vehicle, according to court documents.

Butler police were already looking for Lane on charges stemming from a reported late Friday night domestic assault when his 2000 Jeep Cherokee was spotted shortly before 12:30 a.m. Saturday on Route 8 in Butler Township headed toward the city.

A city officer drove behind the suspect’s Jeep on South Main Street just south of Wayne Street and activated the emergency lights on his patrol car, but Lane would not pull over, documents said.

The officer turned on his siren when the defendant turned onto East Wayne Street. Lane traveled about three-tenths of a mile before he stopped where another officer had used his patrol car to block Lane’s path.

Police ordered the suspect out of his vehicle. But after he got out, documents said, Lane reached his hands toward his waist area on two occasions.

When he was subsequently ordered to drop to his knees, he “verbally and physically refused to do so,” according to a police affidavit.

Police Lt. James Hollobaugh took matters into his owns hands, documents said, and tackled Lane, who was handcuffed and placed in one of the patrol cars.

The defendant, who reeked of alcohol, was taken to Butler Memorial Hospital for a blood test, which he refused.

Lane was later arraigned on misdemeanor charges of driving under the influence, fleeing or attempting to elude police, resisting arrest and driving with a suspended license-DUI related.

He also was arraigned on charges of simple assault and harassment in connection with the domestic dispute abuse case.

In that case, Butler police said, the suspect is accused of pushing a 33-year-old woman to the ground about 9:45 p.m. Friday at her Kaufman Drive home.

He also allegedly threw a container of cooked noodles at the woman, with whom he shares a child, documents said. The alleged victim suffered minor injuries.

Lane was placed in the Butler County Prison on $50,000 bail following arraignment.
