Man shot in woods
CLAY TWP — State police are investigating the weekend shooting of a 35-year-old man in a wooded area near his home on Timblin Road.
Tyrone Smith was treated Sunday afternoon at Butler Memorial Hospital for a gunshot wound to one of his arms, and later released.
The police crime unit is investigating but an accidental shooting has not been ruled out, said Trooper Nathan Brown.
Smith told police that he was walking with his child and dog in the woods near his house in the 200 block of Timblin Road between 3:45 and 4:15 p.m. when he was shot.
The bullet struck him in the right upper forearm, police said.
Smith said he heard the shot and immediately knew he was hit. He also recalled hearing other gunfire before he was struck.
Neighbors told the Butler Eagle that it is common to hear shots coming from the woods, which is frequented by target shooters.
Police would not discuss possible theories but they acknowledged Smith could have been hit by a stray bullet.
Brown said investigators have not identified the caliber of the bullet, which passed through the victim’s arm. Police searched but did not find the slug.
Smith walked back to his house after being struck and drove to the hospital. An emergency room staffer contacted police. Brown said he spoke to Smith at the hospital about 4:30 p.m.
Investigators said they have received no calls or tips since issuing a news release Monday afternoon about the shooting
