Slippery Rock splits pair with Pitt-Johnstown
WASHINGTON, Pa — Slippery Rock University’s baseball team erupted for 10 runs in the bottom of the first inning and went on to crush the University of Pittsburgh-Johnstown 22-4 in the first game of a doubleheader Sunday at CONSOL Energy Park.
UPJ answered with a 12-4 win in Game 2.
The Rock tallied 19 hits in the Game 1 victory, including five off the bat of sophomore Tyler Walters, who drove in five runs and scored three times. Walters doubled and homered.
SRU scored three more runs in the second and posted seven in the third to lead 20-0 after three innings.
Ty Zimmerman and Christian Porterfield both added three hits.
Grove City High School graduate Matt Gordon earned the pitching win, striking out six and walking two while working all seven innings. He allowed four runs (two earned) on seven hits.
The Rock (6-17, 1-3) tallied 11 hits in the second contest, but were held to single runs in the first, third, sixth and seventh innings.
UPJ trailed 2-1 entering the top of the sixth, but scored four runs off of Rock reliever Preston Falascino.
Falascino shouldered the loss after giving up seven runs (five earned) in 1 1/3 innings pitched.
Zimmerman singled and doubled and scored three runs for SRU, while Seneca Valley product Carson Kessler had a base hit and scored once.
