Former employee charged in break-in

ZELIENOPLE — A former Sunoco employee Sunday was arrested for allegedly breaking in and stealing $170 from the gas station on Main Street.

Kurt Auchter, 35, of Fombell was charged with felony burglary, felony criminal trespass and misdemeanor theft by unlawful taking. He is in Butler County Prison on $15,000 bail.

The station manager told Zelienople police Sunday that money was missing.

Video surveillance footage allegedly shows Auchter entering the store at 12:02 a.m., taking money out of a drawer and exiting the building again after less than a minute, according to court records.

Though police were dispatched there for a burglar alarm, they just missed the suspect and didn’t see any evidence of a burglary.

After being arrested at his home later that day, Auchter allegedly admitted to the theft, adding that he pried open the door with a screwdriver.

He told police he needed the money to pay for some items for his children and he “thought he would get away with it,” according to records.

He is scheduled to have a preliminary hearing Tuesday.
