County trail, sidewalk projects receive funds

The Southwestern Pennsylvania Commission on Friday announced funds for a trail and a sidewalk project in Butler County.

The Butler-Freeport Community Trail will receive $300,440 for improvements in Summit, Jefferson, and Winfield townships.

The project will repave 4.4 miles of the trail and construct drainage improvements. The trail connects Butler to Freeport and the Allegheny River via the former Pennsylvania Railroad line.

Cranberry Township’s Rowan Road pedestrian improvements project will get $86,407.

As part of its Bicyclists and Pedestrian Connection Plan, the project will have crosswalks, streetscape additions, trees, and nearly 1,400 feet of new sidewalks.

The project will create connections between residential and educational facilities in the Fox Run neighborhood.

The money comes through the federal Transportation Alternatives Program.

The Southwestern Pennsylvania Commission is a transportation planning organization for a 10-county region that includes Butler County.
