Supervisors mull bids for fire hall

The new Adams Area Fire District fire station will be built at the site of the former Mars Bank drive-through just east of the intersection with Mars-Valencia Road.
6 contracts open for new station

ADAMS TWP — The township supervisors will consider the 33 bids submitted for building the new Adams Area Fire District fire station on Route 228.

The bids are for six contracts for the station that will be built at the site of the former Mars Bank drive-through just east of the intersection with Mars-Valencia Road.

The seven bids that came in for the general contractor ranged from $3.5 million from Fleeher Contracting of Cecil, Pa. to $4.4 million from Hudson Construction of Hermitage.

All of the bids for the general contractor contract included a decrease in price if the township and fire officials decided to go with a steel roof instead of the more expensive aluminum. The amounts ranged from $20,000 less up to $65,000 less.

The six bids for the electrical contract range from $698,700 from IE Power of Kittanning to $799,500 from the Fuellgraf Electric Co. of Butler.

The six bids for the heating, ventilation and air conditioning contract came in at a low of $407,000 from 1st American Industries of Pittsburgh to $467,000 from the McRandal Co. of Pittsburgh.

For the plumbing contract, the lowest of the seven bids came from the William T. Spaeder Co. of Erie at $223,150. The highest was from Reno Brothers of New Brighton, at $345,918.

Three bids were received for the traffic signal on Route 228 that will stop motorists when the fire trucks leave the station to respond to a call.

The lowest was $143,748 from Bronder Technical of Prospect, and the highest was $198,702 from the Bruce and Merrilees Electric Co. of New Castle.

The four bids for a sprinkler system came in at a low of $57,650 by J & J Fire Protection of Butler to a high of $76,349 from the William T. Spaeder Co. of Erie.

The supervisors voted to have the bids reviewed by township administrators, who will make their recommendation to the supervisors. They have 60 days to award the bids.

The 17,500 square-foot fire station will have six truck bays and sleeping accommodations for up to 15 firefighters.

Fire district President Jason Safreed said in April that construction could take two years depending on fundraising.

The Valencia and Seven Fields satellite stations will remain open once the new fire station opens, Safreed said.
