Clues help troopers nab car stereo thief

NY man left wallet, blood

A dropped wallet and at least a drop of blood led investigators in 2014 to the conviction of a man who crossed state and county lines to steal a particular item: a $4,000 sound system for a Volkswagen Passat.

According to court records, the social media for Watervliet, N.Y., native Musa Kirnon displayed a fondness for Volkswagens.

Not likely a coincidence, investigators speculated in a criminal affidavit while investigating the crimes at car dealerships in Allegheny, Butler and Westmoreland counties.

But the proof to come was more solid and binding. According to court records, Kirnon left his wallet inside a vehicle in Lower Burrell, Westmoreland County.

And the thief apparently left blood behind at thefts in Butler Township as well as Bethlehem, Pa. Kirnon’s DNA already was on file due to previous arrests in his home state, according to court records.

The crimes also were linked by fingerprint of sorts. Each vehicle was broken into in the same specific manner.

To avoid triggering security on the cars, the thief broke out the rear window then climbed through it without opening the door.

After the evidence linked Kirnon to the crimes and the uniqueness of the break-ins linked the crimes together, the state police Auto Task Force charged Kirnon in Butler County Court.

Kirnon pleaded guilty to one case of felony theft, and he was sentenced Feb. 18 by Butler County Judge William Shaffer.

Kirnon was sentenced to serve 11½ to 23 months in prison followed by 2 years of probation, and he was ordered to pay $19,000 in restitution for the missing stereos as well as damage to the cars.
