Harmony council approves reopened budget for 2016
HARMONY — The borough council Monday night approved its reopened 2016 budget.
The budget initially was to be $526,920, but now it is $614,040.
The biggest change is an increase in the fire tax from 1.15 mills to 1.5 mills.
The original budget had the fire tax at about $8,000. That has gone up to nearly $10,500.
The Monday meeting was a continuation of its Feb. 2 meeting.
Council President Greg Such said the budget was reopened to make adjustments to line items.
Such said he is satisfied with the new budget, saying he was “overwhelmed” by the costs given by the Harmony Fire District.
The fire department is seeking a new location for its headquarters. It currently operates out of the former Harmony Volunteer Fire Company’s headquarters on Main Street. It also has a satellite station in Lancaster Township.
“We needed to do it,” Such said of the tax increase. “If we don’t, the price of homeowners insurance could go up because of safety certifications.”
Here are other notable changes to the budget: earned income tax, $105,000 to $120,000; general municipal pension system aid, $16,000 to $19,500; pension reimbursements from water authority, $17,000 to $25,781; transfer from water authority — wages, $157,000 to $180,000.
The Lancaster/Jackson share workers’ compensation item was changed to add the Zelienople fire department workers’ compensation. With the addition, the compensation totals increase from about $8,400 to $20,043.
