Students win Hyperloop contestCOLLEGE STATION, Texas — MIT student engineers won a competition to transform SpaceX and Tesla Motors co-founder Elon Musk’s idea into a design for a Hyperloop to move pods of people at high speed.Massachusetts Institute of Technology, based in Cambridge, Mass., was named the winner Saturday after a competition among more than 1,000 college students at Texas A&M University in College Station.The Hyperloop is a high-speed ground transport concept proposed by Musk to transport “pods” of 20 to 30 people through a 12-foot diameter tube at speeds of roughly 700 mph.More than 100 university teams presented design concepts to a panel of judges in the event.The top teams will build their pods and test them at the world’s first Hyperloop Test Track, being built adjacent to SpaceX’s Hawthorne, Calif., headquarters.

Cabbage heads hit highwayROCKY MOUNT, N.C. — Authorities say a tractor-trailer overturned on Interstate 95 in North Carolina and spilled hundreds of heads of cabbage that took hours to clear.Lt. Jeff Gordon of the North Carolina State Highway Patrol told local media outlets that the truck veered off the side of the interstate on Sunday near Rocky Mount, overcorrected and then overturned.He said the 31-year-old driver, Kevin Eugene Ellis, of Middleburg, Fla., faces charges including driving while impaired. Gordon said the driver and a woman in the truck with him were taken to a hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.Authorities said traffic was backed up for at least 10 miles.

Retired general won’t be demotedWASHINGTON — The Pentagon says it won’t demote David Petraeus.The retired Army general pleaded guilty last year to a misdemeanor charge of mishandling classified information while CIA director. That incident stemmed from an affair with his biographer.Media reports had surfaced that indicated the Pentagon was considering downgrading Petraeus. Such a move would have reduced his retirement salary.
