Lancaster will get grant to build park

LANCASTER TWP — The township will receive $150,000 in state grant money for its planned Four Springs Park.

The park, named after the four natural springs on the 26-acre property, will be at the former Haine farm at the intersection of Route 19 and West Lancaster Road.

“The park is a very exciting opportunity for the township and we’re going to continue with the planning process,” township zoning officer Benjamin Kramer said.

Grant money will go toward construction of an access drive, parking area, pedestrian walkway, ADA access, landscaping and other related improvements for the park, according to a news release from the office of state Sen. Elder Vogel, R-47th.

The park’s master site plan was adopted by the township in July.

The township also applied for the grant in 2015. Kramer said the application was delayed because of the state budget impasse.

Four Springs Park will utilize the land’s rolling hills and retain its natural characteristics.

The Haine barn will be used as a three-season recreational facility with several multipurpose rooms once improvements are made.

It is unknown when the park will be built due to funding and other factors. Previous reports said completion may be between 2019 and 2024.

Amenities will include a one-mile walking trail, a new municipal building, a concession stand, sporting fields, shelters, benches and a public water line.

Joretta Kennedy, formerly Joretta Haine, grew up on the farm when her parents farmed the property and previously said she appreciates the park’s planned features.

“They (parents) were very simple people, and I feel this epitomizes their lifestyle,” she said.
