Police say city man stepped in front of Jeep

BUTLER TWP — An intoxicated Butler man was seriously injured Thursday night when he was struck by a Jeep Liberty while trying to cross East Jefferson Street, authorities said.

Adam McCardle, 29, who suffered a head injury, is listed in stable condition this morning at Allegheny General Hospital in Pittsburgh.

Butler Township police said McCardle about 8:20 p.m. was walking on the side of the road in the 900 block of East Jefferson Street, also known as Route 68, when he stepped in front of the northbound Jeep driven by 48-year-old Cheryl Stoner of Butler.

Police Lt. Matthew Pearson said Stoner applied her brakes and tried to avoid McCardle; however, he was struck in her travel lane.

Butler police were initially called to the crash near the township-city line and found McCardle unconscious. He later came to and was treated by paramedics.

He told emergency crews that he was earlier at a store in downtown Butler and was walking home. Police said they smelled a strong odor of alcohol coming from him.

A LifeFlight medical helicopter later flew him to AGH.

Pearson said police plan to cite McCardle for being a pedestrian under the influence and not using a crosswalk.

Stoner was not at fault, Pearson noted, and she will not be charged.
