Butler Art Center debuts new show
“Celebrate America” is the new show at the Butler Art Center, running now to Feb. 26.
The reception for this show is 7 to 9 p.m. Friday. Light refreshments will be provided, and the Harmony Hot Haus band will perform. No reservations are required.
The show will highlight many of the celebrations in America, using February as a starting point.
Some celebrations are historical national holidays such as the birthdays of presidents Lincoln and Washington.
Others are more personal, like Valentine's Day, and many more such as National Margarita Day and Fly a Kite Day are just for fun.
Each month has significant dates to “Celebrate America.”
Participating artist Christy Culp of Penn Township said, “'Celebrate America' challenged area artists to exhibit artwork that emphasized the individuality of being American. Every artist participating comes from a distinct background, uses different media and techniques, and sees our community, as well as our nation, in a unique way.”
Culp interpreted the theme from her potter's viewpoint.
“I make the things humans use on a daily basis: mugs, bowls and plates. The phrase 'American as apple pie' came to mind, which led to memories of making pie with my mother and all of the ways we interact with pie,” she said.Culp is exhibiting a series of small dessert plates with drawings of pie and phrases common to the discussion around eating and sharing pie. At the opening reception, guests can choose a plate and a piece of pie and sit down with other guests. This show has been changed to a nonjuried event, so no cash awards or ribbons will be presented. The Art Center, 344 S. Main St., is open 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Wednesdays through Fridays and noon to 4 p.m. Saturdays. For information and reservations for classes, workshops or parties, call 724-283-6922 or e-mail office@butlerartcenter.org.
