Pair allegedly tries to sell stolen vehicle parts as scrap
WINFIELD TWP — Hearings are pending for a pair of suspected scrappers accused of trying to unload stolen vehicle parts and metal at a salvage yard in the township.
State police arrested Casey D. Huffman, 27, of Cranberry Township and Brandon S. Wissinger, 26, of Saxonburg after they showed up Thursday at Jon Garvin Auto Salvage on Franklin Drive with a truck full of scrap for sale.
It turned out that the property, which included commercial truck parts, was stolen from Wayne W. Sell Corp. in Winfield Township, according to court documents.
Earlier that day, Jon Garvin, owner of the salvage yard, alerted police after the suspects brought in a load of scrap that he later learned belonged to Sell Corp.
Garvin again notified police when he learned that Wissinger “was coming back to the scrap yard with a full load,” documents said.
Huffman was with Wissinger on the return trip. Police arrested both men.
Wissinger admitted that he and Huffman had stolen the scrap from Sell Corp., investigators said.
Police, meanwhile, suspected Wissinger was impaired by drugs when he drove to the salvage yard. A police-certified drug recognition expert subsequently confirmed the suspicion.
Both suspects were arraigned on misdemeanor charges of theft and receiving stolen property. Wissinger also is charged with driving under the influence of drugs.
A preliminary hearing for Wissinger, who is free on his own recognizance, is set for March 23 at the office of District Judge Sue Haggerty in Saxonburg.
Huffman is being held in Butler County Prison on $50,000 bail. He is awaiting his preliminary hearing date.
