CRANBERRY TWP — Matinee, Mumble and Munch, Cranberry's multicultural movie matinee series, will begin with the film “English Vinglish” at noon Jan. 30.

The Cranberry Area Diversity Network is hosting the series. Admission is free.

The first film installment is about an Indian woman transplanted to New York whose lack of English becomes a major source of insecurity for herself and her family.

Following the 134-minute showing in Cranberry Public Library's Franklin Station room, guests can share an assortment of Indian hors d'oeuvres and participate in a discussion led by Dr. Yasmin Purohit, a Sewickley resident who serves as the chief diversity and inclusion officer at Robert Morris University.

Diversity coordinators Gary Winterhalter and Charles Hawkins founded the network in 1993.

Winterhalter said, “We thought, 'What can we do to make a more diverse area?'”

The group had a presentation at the library last year and at Community Days the past two years, but this is the first film series.

In the spring, the Network will hold its second annual Folk 'n Food celebration during CranFest from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. April 9 in the Municipal Center.

“It's to get people in and get people to talk about diversity and inclusion,” Winterhalter said.

Other films in the Matinee, Mumble and Munch series, and foods that will work with the films, are scheduled for March 5 and April 23, though the films have not been chosen yet.

The series is co-sponsored by the Cranberry Area Diversity Network, the Cranberry Public Library, Sister Cities of Cranberry Township, and Cranberry Township.

Seating is limited, so reservations are required and may be made at www.CranberryLibrary.org/RegisterOnline.
