Traffic stop ends in arrest
EAST DEER TWP, Allegheny County — A Butler County man is accused of assaulting two municipal police officers following a speeding and drunken driving traffic stop last fall.
Cory W. Alter, 23, of Jefferson Township was arrested Tuesday on a list of charges, including two felonies, stemming from the November stop on Route 28 in East Deer Township. He is in the Allegheny County Jail on $5,000 bail.
State police were doing speed enforcement about 1:05 a.m. Nov. 21 when they clocked Alter’s car traveling 91 mph in a 55 mph zone. The trooper pulled over the suspect and immediately smelled a “strong odor” of alcohol on his breath, court documents.
Alter was arrested after failing a field sobriety test. But he refused to willingly go into the patrol car, prompting the trooper to request police back up.
Tarentum police officers Bob Lang and Steve Freiberg came to help. But Alter still would not get into the cruiser.
While resisting police efforts, he kicked Freiberg in the right knee and pinned Lang’s right hand against the passenger side rear door with his feet, according to a police affidavit. The officers’ injuries were minor.
Alter also allegedly kicked the inside of the patrol car’s door.
A trooper used his Taser’s drive stun mode twice before Alter finally complied and got into the cruiser.
He was taken to ACMH Hospital in East Franklin Township, Armstrong County, for a blood test. Toxicology reports later showed his blood-alcohol level was 0.179 percent, or more than double the state’s 0.08 percent legal limit.
District Judge Carolyn Bengel on Tuesday arraigned Alter on two felony counts of aggravated assault and misdemeanor charges of resisting arrest and driving under the influence.
Additionally, he was arraigned on summary charges of disorderly conduct, speeding and careless driving.
