II-VI set to grow
CLINTON TWP — II-VI will spend $110 million to buy two businesses.
The company, which manufactures engineered materials and optoelectronic components, announced Tuesday that it would buy EpiWorks of Champaign, Ill., and ANADIGICS of Warren, N.J.
In a news release, II-VI said it is buying the companies to expand its technology platforms and production capacity for certain semiconductor lasers.
The company said this will put the company in a position to serve growing markets using vertical cavity surface emitting lasers (VCSELs), which have applications in consumer electronics, data centers and the medical field. The market for these lasers is expected to grow more than 20 percent per year.
II-VI CEO Francis Kramer said the company’s work in these markets led it to the belief that an increased investment was needed immediately.
“VCSELs address the need for increasingly intelligent human-machine interfaces such as gesture recognition in consumer electronic products as well as the growing demand for short-reach, high-speed optical connectivity in data centers worldwide,” Kramer said in a statement.
EpiWorks produces compound semiconductor wafers for electronic and photonic devices. Its revenue in 2015 was $14 million.
ANADIGICS has a foundry that produces gallium arsenic wafers, which is expected to add capacity faster and more economically than if II-VI would build a new one. Its revenue over the past nine months is $46 million.
The deals are expected to close within 60 days.
