Firefighters from five companies were called to battle a fire that destroyed a mobile home on Stevenson Road in Connoquenessing Township on Tuesday afternoon. The home's tenant and his pup, Rebel, escaped without injuries.
Crews battle 2 blazes amid bitter cold temps

Firefighters braved bitter cold temperatures Tuesday afternoon to douse two blazes in different locations in Butler County.

No one was injured in either blaze, but in Connoquenessing Township, a mobile home on Stevenson Road was destroyed.

Tenant Jim Karam said he was in the auto shop next door working on a friend's vehicle when he heard a crackling noise, then saw the fire.

Karam, who lives in the home with his pup named Rebel, said the fire started toward the front of the house in the kitchen and laundry area. The fire call went out to 911 about 1 p.m.

When firefighters arrived, the front of the house already was in flames, said Butler Township Fire District No. 3 Assistant Chief David Bestwick.

With temperatures being so cold, water was freezing in puddles around the fire crews as they battled the blaze.

In addition to the cold temperature, the location of the home and the lack of fire hydrants in the well-water-only area hindered the firefighting effort, Bestwick said.

Five volunteer fire departments responded: Butler Township Fire District No. 3, Connoquenessing, Herman, South Butler and Prospect.

Bestwick said the extra departments were especially needed to transport water to the site.

Bestwick said he could not immediately identify the cause of the fire.

The American Red Cross was called to assist Karam, who lost everything in his home. His truck, parked outside the home, appeared to have minor heat damage. But even before firefighters had cleared the sight, people were stopping by to visit Karam and to offer assistance.“I have a lot of friends,” he said.About an hour after that call, someone reported a blaze at an old farm home at 1810 Perry Highway in Muddy Creek Township.Firefighters quickly doused that blaze. No one was injured or in the home, which is reportedly vacant.Portersville Volunteer Fire Department Assistant Chief Todd Hinkle said the fire started in a rubbish can in a second-floor bathroom, and did little damage.“Just some black walls and burnt clothing,” he said.Four fire departments responded.
