Car hits woman in lot
JEFFERSON TWP — A woman suffered a compound leg fracture Tuesday evening when she was struck by a car while walking in the parking lot at a convenience store on Dinnerbell Road, authorities said.
The woman, believed to be in her 50s or 60s, was taken by ambulance to Allegheny General Hospital in Pittsburgh following the incident at about 5:50 p.m. at the BP/Fueland store.
State police are investigating but they did not immediately file an accident report.
Emergency crews said the woman, who lives at the Saxony Estates mobile home park behind the store, suffered a badly broken ankle.
The woman had walked to the store and had just stepped onto the back corner of the parking lot when a small compact car hit her, said Chief Chris Ballina of the Saxonburg Volunteer Fire Department.
“The driver said, ‘I never saw (the woman),’” Ballina said. He noted that a row of pine trees separates the trailer park and store.
Coincidentally, the driver, a woman in her 50s, also lives at Saxony Estates.
The pedestrian was about 10 feet from the gas pumps when she was hit on the left side and knocked to the ground.
She was bleeding and in a lot of pain, authorities said. Others at the store, apparently customers and employees, rushed to help, covering the woman’s ankle and keeping her still until Saxonburg EMS and fire crews arrived.
