TERRIBLE TREE — It started with the “Terrible Towel” and expanded to the “Terrible T-shirt.” But no one had the Terrible Tree until neighbors’ requests to see Elmer and Bert Holmes’ Steelers memorabilia planted the idea. The family even used photographs of it for their Christmas cards. The couple, who lived on Old Plank Road, also dropped off Steelers and Pirates souvenirs to government officials and sports enthusiasts on their trips across the country in January 1980.
