Musical event returns Jan. 22-23

Echo Valley bluegrass band featuring siblings from the Anderson family will perform at this year's January Ice Jam scheduled for Jan. 22 and 23.

BUTLER TWP — This year's January Ice Jam will once again bring people together to enjoy bluegrass music on Jan. 22 and 23 at the Days Inn, Route 8. Admission is free.

In its 19th year, the Ice Jam is for listeners, new musicians and veteran players alike. As many as 28 bands will donate their time playing traditional, contemporary and gospel bluegrass music.

Bands will include the Allegheny Drifters, South 79, Keep Off the Grass and Echo Valley, among others. Many bands donate professionally recorded CDs of their own music to raffle off during the festival.

The Ice Jam officially begins when the first band takes the stage at 7 p.m. Jan. 22. The jam will resume at 1 p.m. Jan. 23.Bands play 30 minute sets until about 11 p.m. both days.Music is played on stage as well as informally throughout the facility.The January Ice Jam originated as a way of bringing “bluegrassers” together during the winter months.
