ZELIENOPLE — The borough council Monday night approved the final design for the municipal parking lot planned for between Main and South Clay Streets.

The lot is part of the borough’s revitalization project.

“We’re chomping at the bit,” borough manager Don Pepe said. “I want to see this get going.”

The parking lot’s final design, created by Herbert, Rowland & Grubic, has 111 spaces. Originally, 159 and 170 spaces were planned.

However, other amenities for the parking lot, including islands and trash receptacles will take up space. It will have one primary entry point on its southern side.

Parking will be metered with an electronic kiosk. Only those staying at the Kaufman House will be allowed to park in the lot for more than 24 hours.

HRG representatives and council members said they hope to break ground for the parking lot by early April.

“I’m excited to have it approved,” HRG senior landscape architect Jim Feath said. “It’s the step we needed to continue.”

Lighting also was approved.

From two options, council picked one that has six, 23-feet high light poles.

“They’re the same height as the poles on Main Street,” borough manager Don Pepe said about the tall light poles.

The next step for the project is to get a bid out for contractors.

Other phases for the revitalization is to reopen the Kaufman House and refurbish sidewalks and streetlights on Main Street.

Five houses were demolished late last year to clear space for the parking lot.
