HARMONY — The borough soon will have its streetlights replaced by LED lighting.

The light replacements are expected to save the borough about 43 percent of what it pays for light services from West Penn Power, council member David Szakelyhidi said.

“We rent the ones (lights) on the utility poles,” he said. “That rent buys you the maintenance, electricity and the light.”

He said the borough entered a government rebate program to get the new, cost-effective lights.

The borough has 64 streetlights and pays about $900 a month for light services. The new LED lights are expected to bring that cost down to about $500 per month.

Szakelyhidi also said LED lights require less maintenance and electricity.

“Supposedly we were about the fifth municipality through them to do this program,” he said.

The replacement process will start in February.

Szakelyhidi said the decision to switch to lower-cost lighting comes from raised rates for lighting services.

Borough-owned post lights were replaced with LED lighting last year. Those include historic lighting along Route 68 and across the Mercer Street bridge.
