Family flees fire in home in Winfield Township

WINFIELD TWP — No one was injured Monday evening after a wood burner started a fire in a home on Star Grille Road.

The fire started shortly before 5 p.m. in the 100 block of the rural road. Saxonburg Fire Chief Chris Ballina said the fire was caused by a wood burner in the basement.

The blaze went up a metal flue along the exterior wall of the home and spread to the peak eave of the roof, the chief said.

The fire burned through the wall and caused some damage to the upstairs bedroom, Ballina said. He did not have an estimate on the value of the damage.

Neighbors said a family with three children lived in the home. No one was injured.

Ballina said the family will be staying with relatives.

Daniel Markle owns the property, according to county records. He lives there with his wife, two teenaged children and an adult child.

Markle and one of his children were home at the time of the fire.

There were 40 firefighters from seven fire companies called to the scene. Crews cleared about 7 p.m.
