Protest set today at Mall of AmericaMINNEAPOLIS — Activists are planning a Black Lives Matter demonstration that they say could bring hundreds of protesters to the Mall of America.The protest set for today at the nation’s largest mall is aimed at drawing attention to the police shooting last month of a black Minneapolis man, Jamar Clark. The 24-year-old died the day after he was shot by police responding to an assault complaint.A similar demonstration last December drew hundreds of demonstrators angry over the absence of charges following the police killings of unarmed black men in New York City and Ferguson, Mo. Stores in the mall had to close, and dozens of people were arrested.The privately owned mall said another demonstration would mean lost sales.The mall sought a court order blocking the planned protest. A judge on Tuesday barred three organizers from attending the demonstration but said she doesn’t have the power to prevent others from showing up to demonstrate.Bloomington police have not said what security measures the mall may put in place.

Davis ponders role in marriage debateFRANKFORT, Ky. — Rowan County Clerk Kim Davis, who spent five days in jail for refusing to issue marriage licenses to same-sex couples, said she prayed for those who disagreed with her and feels the pace of social change has “awakened” Christians across the country.In an interview with The Associated Press about her year at the center of one of the biggest social changes in decades, Davis described it as “a very emotional and a very real situation to all people.” But she said simply telling others about her faith was not “going to make anybody believe anything.” And so she put her faith in action by refusing to issue the licenses.“No one would ever have remembered a county clerk that just said ... ‘Even though I don’t agree with it, it’s OK. I’ll do it,”’ Davis said. “If I could be remembered for one thing, it’s that I was not afraid to not compromise myself.”
