CLAY TWP — A 70-year-old man died Monday afternoon in a vehicle accident on Route 8.

State police said Joseph P. Godlewski of Boyers was pronounced dead at the scene of the crash at 5:15 p.m. by Butler County Coroner William Young.

A medical issue may have caused the accident, Young said. An autopsy will be done.

Police said Godlewski was driving northbound about 4:40 p.m. when his pickup truck sped up for an unknown reason. The truck began to spin then traveled off the right side of the road and struck a tree.

The accident occurred just north of the Playthings Etc. toy store, according to dispatch reports.

Godlewski was not wearing a seat belt, police said.

Emergency crews from Unionville and West Sunbury volunteer fire departments assisted at the scene until about 7 p.m.
