SRU nets nail-biting victory

SLIPPERY ROCK — Abdul King scored his only points of the night at the perfect time.

King drained a jumper from inside the paint with 3.1 seconds left Wednesday night, handing the Slippery Rock University men’s basketball team a 60-59 win over Mercvhurst at Morrow Field House.

The Rock (7-4, 3-3) led by as many as 11 with 12:08 to play before the visiting Lakers battled back to take a 54-52 lead late in the game.

After King hit the go-ahead basket, SRU fouled Mercyhurst’s Damon Jones with 0.4 seconds left. Jones missed the front end of the one-and-one and The Rock had the win.

Jones led all scorers with 23 points for the Lakers (6-4, 4-3). Chaquille Pratt had 14 points and six rebounds for SRU, Malcolm Richardson 11 points, seven assists and four rebounds.

Mercyhurst 80, SRU 65 (women) — SRU (7-4, 4-2) fell behind by 15 early and had its three-game winning streak snapped. Audrey Stapleton scored 12 points for The Rock.

Erica Aiello and Ciara Patterson scored 11 points each for SRU.

Both Rock teams host Seton Hill Saturday. The women’s game is at 1 p.m., the men’s game at 3 p.m.
