Hampton heats up

Knoch junior point guard Austin Hannes battles for a loose ball with Hampton's Mark Shehady during the second half of Friday's game at Knoch High School.
Talbots make 8 treys in win over Knoch

JEFFERSON TWP — The 100th meeting between the Knoch and Hampton boys basketball teams continued the recent trend.

The Talbots' quick guards had the Knights out of sync in a 68-61 Section 3-AAA win Friday night at Knoch High School.

Hampton, which has won 11 straight and 20 of the past 21 over Knoch, made eight 3-pointers and 29 trips to the free-throw line.

The Talbots knocked down 22 of those free throws.

Knights coach Ron McNabb said his team has spent the last six months working on dribble penetration, but their issues on defense are fixable.

“Tonight they exposed us and it's disappointing,” McNabb said. “It's correctable and you have to have great effort.”

Hampton (2-1, 1-0) trailed for less than 10 seconds. Josh Knochel gave Knoch its only lead with 5 minutes, 39 seconds left in the first quarter, 5-4, on an assist from Austin Hannes.

Kyle Reese made a layup on the next possession for the Talbots to put them back ahead.

It was the start of an 8-2 run that helped Hampton build a 19-10 lead by the end of the first quarter.

“We have an offensive system that is geared toward getting to the basket and getting penetration,” Talbots coach Joe Lafko said. “I thought we did that well. Mark Shehady was able to break down defense and get to the paint.”

Once Shehady got into the paint, he kicked out to start 3-point barrage. Hampton made five treys in the second quarter, including four from Antonio Ionadi, who finished with a game-high 22 points.

The Talbots shot 38 percent (8-of-21) from the perimeter.

“I think we need to guard the ball a little bit better and stop penetration,” said Knochel, who finished with 11 points.

Despite the early struggles, Knoch, which trailed by as many as 17, closed the half with a layup by Jackson McKee to close the gap to 39-26.

Knochel followed with a 3-pointer after halftime to cut the lead to 10.

“At halftime, our guys thought we played poorly and we're within striking distance,” McNabb said. “But we never struck. We got close and they hit a couple threes.”

Ionadi hit the first trey, Mark Shehady made a jumper and Ben Huber followed with another trey that put Hampton up 47-31.

“We played with a lot of intensity tonight and it was the most intensity we've played with this year,” Lafko said. “We've talked a lot in practice about that. We showed that tonight.”

Knoch (1-3, 0-1) didn't cut the deficit within single digits until the waning seconds.

Mac Christy led the Knights with 12 points, while McKee also finished with 12.

Knoch started slow from the field, shooting 10 of 26 in the first half.

Knochel said the Knights have plans to work on a lot of different things.

“I think we need to get inside a little bit more,” Knochel said. “We need to look inside first and then kick it out.”
