Mars works on some kinks
ADAMS TWP — Rob Carmody took some pros and cons from his team's first game of the season.
The good included 13 three-point goals and a 34-17 edge in rebounds as the Mars boys basketball team crushed Cardinal Wuerl North Catholic 81-49 in the first round of the Scott Lang Memorial Tournament at Mars High School Friday night.
“We obviously did some good things,” Carmody said. “We shot the ball well (30-of-58), but had way too many turnovers (20) and committed some sloppy fouls.
“Our execution wasn't where it needs to be, but that is to be expected. You don't want to look like you are ready for March on Dec. 4. We have some things we can work on before our first section game.”
The Planets led 22-11 after one quarter, then dropped a 34-point bomb on the Trojans in the second period to lead 56-27 at halftime. Guards Christian Schmitt and Robby Carmody both scored 11 points in the second quarter alone.
All 17 players who dressed for Mars saw playing time.
“I'm happy we got a lot of contributions,” said Carmody. “Hopefully, we can continue to exploit that. Guys like John Castello, Sam Morrissey and Nate Sablowski, they played football and need to get in basketball shape. The only way to do that is play.”
Robby Carmody paced Mars with 20 points and Schmitt added 19, including five three-pointers. Castello managed a double-double with 10 points and 10 rebounds.
“John is so dynamic both offensively and defensively,” said Rob Carmody, who said the 13 seniors on the team actually had mixed emotions about a season with such promise getting under way.
“There's that level of the boys can't waiting to play the first game,” he said, “but a lot of them have known each other since kindergarten or first grade. So, there's also a sense that once it starts, there will be an end to it. Whether that comes in February or March, we'll see. But time goes so fast and this senior class is so close, it's weighing on them a bit.”
The Trojans were decent from the floor (22-of-42), but turned the ball over 28 times. Mars' length caused problems for Dave Long's team the entire game.
“The positive I can take out of this is that it is not a sprint, it's more of an endurance thing,” he said. “You learn how to pick yourself up off the mat and get ready for the next battle.”
The Trojans will face Penn Hills, which lost to Bethel Park 71-67 in overtime, in the consolation game at 6 p.m. Saturday.
Mars will meet Bethel Park in the championship game at 7:30 p.m.
