VA Pgh. notifies 400 vets of TB case

PITTSBURGH — The Veterans Affairs Pittsburgh Health Care System has sent letters to 400 veterans who might have crossed paths with someone diagnosed with tuberculosis last month.

Doctors confirmed the patient’s bacterial infection on Nov. 17 and say the veteran is responding well to antibiotics.

The veteran has visited a VA outpatient clinic in Beaver County and the VA Pittsburgh campus in Oakland since September. Notification letters were sent out to veterans who might have come into contact with the patient.

Officials say the chance of developing tuberculosis from this level of exposure is low. Most people exposed to a patient with the infection don’t become ill, but doctors recommend the veterans get tested “out of an abundance of caution.”
