2 accused of stealing saws from business
PENN TWP — A pair of alleged thieves are accused of walking away last week with three chop saws from a township business.
One of the suspects later sold the saws, valued at more than $2,000 total, to a Westmoreland County pawnshop, police said.
Penn Township police on Saturday arrested William A. Hohman, 32, of Butler and Cameron D. Stover, 23, of Clinton Township on felony theft and other charges in the case.
A surveillance camera captured video of the crime shortly before midnight Nov. 9 at Penn Fencing on Route 8. Police said two men are seen leaving the business carrying the saws.
Investigators believe the men, later identified as Hohman and Stover, drove away in a sport utility vehicle, according to court documents.
The next day, police said a Penn Fencing employee recognized one of the stolen saws that was listed for sale on Craigslist. A New Kensington pawnshop was the seller.
Penn Township Patrolman Dennis Crawford and a Penn Fencing manager went to the shop and identified the stolen saw. Police learned Hohman and a woman, who was not charged in the theft, sold the saw to the shop, documents said.
The two were seen on video surveillance leaving the pawnshop in the same SUV that was spotted on security video at Penn Fencing.
Middlesex Township police on Friday stopped the vehicle, which Hohman was driving. Stover, one of the passengers, was found with suspected heroin and other drug contraband, police said.
During a subsequent interview, Hohman admitted that he and Stover had taken the saws “to obtain money for rent,” according to a police affidavit.
Both defendants were arraigned on felony charges of theft, conspiracy and receiving stolen property, and a summary charge of trespass.
Additionally, Stover is charged with misdemeanor counts of possessing a controlled substance and drug paraphernalia, and Hohman was cited for driving with a suspended license.
Each was placed in the Butler County Prison on $10,000 bail following arraignment.
