Mercer County — An Illinois man driving the wrong way on Interstate 80 was killed Friday night when his vehicle collided head on with a Butler County family’s sport utility vehicle, authorities said.

Jimmy R. Smith, 53, of Chicago was driving west in the interstate’s eastbound lanes in Lackawannock Township shortly before 9:45 p.m. when his 2014 Kia Soul struck head-on a 2005 Cadillac Escalade, according to state police.

Smith was pronounced dead at the scene of the crash in southwestern Mercer County.

Brad Kohlmeyer, 38, of West Sunbury was driving the eastbound SUV. He and his wife, Hilary Kohlmeyer, 37, and the couple’s three children, ages 7, 9 and 11, were all taken to the Grove City Medical Center with unspecified injuries.

A condition report for the Kohlmeyer family was not available this morning.
